inductionservice

An exciting chapter is beginning in the history of TCM as we welcome Rev Mike Smailes as our new pastor.

Around 400 people attended Mike’s induction service on January 26, which included more than 100 from his previous church, West Street Baptist Church in Dunstable.

The pastor at West Street, Rev Mark Lawrence, introduced Mike and his wife Sandie and explained Mike’s former ministry in Dunstable.

From 2001, Mike served as Assistant Pastor, becoming Associate Pastor in 2003. His ministry there was blessed by God with many people becoming Christians, the church growing in size and Christian maturity, as well as the community of Dunstable being touched by the gospel.

Mike attended the Cornhill Training Course in London in the early years of his ministry before continuing his theological studies with Moore College.

The act of induction was carried out by Rev Andy Paterson, pastor at Kensington Baptist Church, Bristol where Mike was first called to the ministry.

It was while at the church that Mike and Sandie had their two sons, Joshua and Daniel. They were later blessed with a daughter, Grace.

Mike gave a positive response to Andy’s questions about his own faith and his call to be pastor at TCM, as well as his responsibility to faithfully preach God’s word, care for the spiritual well-being of church members and be a faithful shepherd and example to the church.

Andy then urged members of TCM to take seriously the promise of receiving Mike as our pastor and uniting under his leadership, supporting and encouraging him and Sandie in prayer and Christian service.

The charge to the new pastor was made by Mark Lawrence, who used Paul’s last words to Timothy in 2 Tim 4:1-5.

Mark echoed the apostle’s charge to his apprentice – ‘preach the Word’ – and said this was the heart and soul of what being a minister is all about.

He said God’s word should be preached both in season and out of season; both when the Bible’s teaching is fashionable and when it is not.

Mark gave two further charges from the passage: ‘do not despair’ and ‘keep leading.’

TCM’s former pastor, Rev Hugh Hill, gave the charge to the church from Hebrews 13:17 – ‘obey your leaders and submit to their authority.’

He called upon the church to be active in spreading the gospel message and to avoid being spectators.

He said the gospel itself never changed but the way we present it to others should reflect our changing society.

Hugh’s seven years as pastor saw the church grow greatly and expand its ministries; we anticipate many more blessings under Mike’s future leadership as we forge ahead in our mission of proclaiming the gospel to the people of Lincoln.
